What happens when a zero-net-carbon building must also be ready to become a community lifeline? The 2026 Architecture at Zero competition invited teams to use energy analysis and carbon-conscious design as integral parts of the design process, exploring energy efficiency, renewable energy and storage, passive design, embodied-carbon reduction, climate adaptation, and equity within the requirements of California Title 24. The challenge centered on La Plaza, a two-story cultural and educational center in Lancaster, CA that must also function as an Emergency Operations Center during regional emergencies. This moderated panel features Perkins & Will presenting the Merit Award-winning La Plaza Viva, and Stantec, presenting the Citation Award-winning CARAPACE | La Plaza Arts and Culture Center. By comparing two distinct responses to the same program and performance goals, attendees will gain ideas they can apply to their own work to bring energy performance, carbon reduction, and resilience into the design conversation earlier and more intentionally.
Speakers:
Shivanthi Carpino | Principal, Studio X Lead, Stantec
Yiwei Huang LEED AP BD+C, CPHC, LFA | Sustainable Design Advisor, Perkins & Will
