The future of our industry relies on bold goal-setting, strong dedication to commitments, and trust across the team to realize those ideals. This panel discussion will demonstrate the power of this trifecta through two award-winning school projects that pursue net zero energy in very different settings. At University High School (UHS) in San Francisco, the new all-electric California Campus sits in a dense urban neighborhood and is LEED Platinum certified and designed to achieve net zero energy, despite multiple evolutions in program, unanticipated infrastructure requirements, and considerable site constraints. At Malibu High School, a “hillside living laboratory” models wildfire resilient design in a high-risk environment, bridging high-performance engineering with immersive education so that Net Zero and embodied carbon goals become tangible learning tools through indoor-outdoor integration. Designers from both teams will candidly share their process of delivering projects that show how design performance can stretch to the edges while creating welcoming, inspiring campuses for passionate and curious learners.
